A 23-year-old student journalist in Afghanistan has been sentenced to death for downloading and distributing a report that is critical of the oppressive treatment of women in some Islamic societies.
Pervez Kambaksh was tried by an Islamic sharia court and was not allowed legal representation. The Afghan Senate passed a motion this week supporting the sentence, according to the British newspaper The Independent. Other journalists have been warned that they would be arrested if they protested in support of Kambaksh.
The Independent has launched a campaign to support Kambaksh, urging readers to pressure the UK Foreign Office to intervene with the Afghan government.
The newspaper has posted a petition online for readers to fill out and submit.

The yards are full of political
signs and Halloween decorations. It's almost election day in Franklin County. Columbus Ohio is known for three things 1) that freeway sniper, 2) the on stage murder of Dimebag Daryl, and 3) ground zero in the theft of the presidential election. That's all people from around the world want to talk about on the internet. A potential My Space friend from Brussels or Thailand wants to know if I voted for Bush and why did that nut kill that guy from Pantera. All they have only seen of Columbus was taped off crime scenes and long lines at the poles.
The sad thing is that most people in this town are either shell shock, in denial, or completely oblivious about what happened. This is a hard pill to swallow. The first step is realizing those talking heads of the news didn't do their jobs, or worse. The glowing big screen in the living room can tell you lies. Years later, someone will write a book or create a documentary exposing the truth, but by then it's ancient history. If you ask why Donald Rumsfeld is shaking Saddam Hussien's hand in that picture, someone will no doubt snap, "That's ancient history!"
When you find out Rumsfeld was shaking Saddam's hand a few months after he mass murdered, someone will surely squeal, " You are just a conspiracy theorist!". When you wonder why Reagan's men (who were formerly Nixon's men, and now Bush's men) thought it was a good idea to sell weapons to Iraq & Iran, train Noreaga, and fight with Osama Bin Laden in Afghanistan; someone is bound to ask you why you hate America.
Sometimes I think people voted for Bush over Kerry, because Bush had a rounder face. Just today, I was minding my own business and stopped at a light. A pick up truck spotted my "Enough is enough! Vote Democratic" bumper sticker, rolled down the window and yelled " I don't want my taxes to go up!" I was speechless. Rooting for republicans like they were a football team. He choose the delusion that he was a successful country club elitist who needed to distance himself from poor people, blacks, and gays. He could stick a "support the troops" magnet and a "these colors don't run" sticker on his truck and then never worry his little head about those matters. Never mind that he's hopelessly in debt and oblivious to getting outsourced in a matter of months. I've seen the future. You can't afford it.
At least he feels he's on the winning team. My party is pushing for the minimum wage, which is very depressing, indeed. If we win, someone's gonna get $6.50 an hour! He's got Fox News, I've got an AM station that will break in to an interview with Gore Vidal and Noam Chomsky to play a Bowling Green football game. That says it all, doesn't it? To make it worse, many people who's down with the cause hadn't even read the definite article about how the presidential election was taken. For those who have the eyes to see it, here's the Bobby Kennedy article in Rolling Stone.
For those busy citizen's who are on the run, I dare you to download and listen to The 2004 Election Theft Podcast. This is an edited version of from Thom Hartmann's radio show explaining the findings in the Bobby Kennedy Jr. article and is as close as one gets to a convenient article-on-tape. Pop this in your ipod and let it sink in your brain. Pretty soon you'll be bringing up the evidence of hanky panky with your colleagues and co workers. Maybe you'll grow tired of the news on the television focusing on trivial things. Critical thinking is an extreme sport.

I never thought I'd actually post this photo, but I was wrong. It's just an innocent photo of the most powerful man on the planet at a rally. Don't read anything into it.
The Bill of Rights has been shreaded. Today.
Democrats in favor - Carper (Del.), Johnson (S.D.), Landrieu (La.), Lautenberg (N.J.), Lieberman (Conn.), Menendez (N.J), Nelson (Fla.), Nelson (Neb.), Pryor (Ark.), Rockefeller (W. Va.), Salazar (Co.), Stabenow (Mich.). Republicans against - Chafee (R.I.).

When the government is controlled by corporations that control the media, get ready for some weird shit. Forget about Dan Rather and Walter Cronkite, meet perky Katie! She'll make the lies go down easy with her sugary smile. The founding fathers had no idea how stupid Americans could become when they were raised by a glowing screen in the family room. In every ghetto and trailer park, that fucker is providing relief to everyone. Escapism is only a remote control click away. As far as what's going on, who knows? Who is to say what's true with FOX News in town? Truthiness is close enough to actual "truth", but it won't set you free. What would you prefer anyway? The cold hard truth or those sweet little comforting lies that happy Katie is going to tell you. Maybe you can't handle the truth.
43% of Americans still believe Saddam had something to do with 911. That's a whole lotta ignorant sheep for a democracy to survive. Not everybody is checking in with NPR, BBC, the Times, and The Post, are they? If those news organizations are dismissed as so many deceitful liberals, then who's to know what to believe? A citizen's duty went the way of civic classes in school . I've seen people glaze over and almost fall over when trying to comprehend five minutes of an NPR story. They were just not brought up to follow that crap. It's all too much, isn't it? People don't have a right to a trial. We are torturing prisoners even though anyone will say anything when your nuts are hooked up to a car battery. Every phone call you make is monitored. The government might be look through your things while you are at work. Our country lied us into preemptive wars that made the rest of planet earth hate us.
We once were a beacon of hope and freedom, people! What happened? Now the kids are all fat and playing video games. Now the only thing we manufacture is hamburgers. The news is what's on TV. What's on TV must be true. Right? Now don't you worry your little head about it, child.
Big brother wants to tell you a story.
I was always a newspaper guy myself. I used to get the Saturday NY Times, make some expresso, and relax in my comfortable chair. The Saturday Times used to sneak in the important stuff, as well as the covering the ugly facts the government lets loose on Friday afternoon. Because the weekend's for football and shopping, am I right?
As soon as I got the internet and had access to newspapers around the world, I had a new hobby. Finding out important stuff that happening around the globe. Saving the world. Knowing too much. I could handle the truth, yet I had to know who owned who. I found out pretty fast that corporate media could kill stories, frame the debate, and even destroy people. No one was to be trusted. No one was innocent. Everyone had an agenda.
At work I'd get into political discussions at breaktime. It was never my idea. Since most folks watch CNN, Fox, and maybe a 6:30 news brief: I'd surprise them with information that was brand spanking new.
I remember expressing frustration over the Iraq war and having people exclaim, "Well, we had to do something!" I would look deep in their eyes and say, "Iraq had nothing to do with 911." They would look back, silently. Their expression said "TV wouldn't lie to me!" Yeah. Every friggin' day, pal.
Since I got a blog and all, I'm going to post the newspaper articles I think are very important. Weekly. So when someone asks, "what's your source?", I can tell them to go to TheMagicBeans.com and hit the blog button. When your government lies to you, patriots need all the help they can get. It's better to be smart and depressed then dumb & happy. If you look real close at the dumb & happy crowd, they aren't too happy after all. Poor and hopeless is more like it. Anywho, this weeks creepy headlines are:

An African coworker told me that the bumper stickers on my car would have gotten me killed in his homeland. I told him that this country was a democracy and that we have no king. The president and all government officials are our employees. They work for us. When somebody's messing it all up, they should get fired, just like us. As I said that, a part of me realized that just posting an entry in this blog could get me an FBI file. I guess freedom isn't free of hassles.
As far as remembering what happened on 911, you don't really need a semi-factual docudrama. This is all the actual footage you need to see.
Then ask, why is this man still in office.
Happy 911.
Corporately owned main stream media doesn't have a liberal bias. If it did, it would sound like the Mike Malloy Show. And it doesn't.
Here's the latest installment.
